- Diabetes: Understanding the Condition
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs when the body is unable to regulate blood glucose levels appropriately. Glucose, a vital source of energy for the body’s cells, requires the hormone insulin to enter cells and be utilized effectively. In diabetes, either the body doesn’t produce enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or becomes resistant to the effects of insulin (Type 2 diabetes), leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
Causes of Diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes: This type is primarily an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, causing little to no insulin production.
- Type 2 Diabetes: Lifestyle factors such as obesity, sedentary habits, and genetics play a significant role in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance and decreased insulin production contribute to this form.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Treatment of Diabetes:
- Lifestyle Modifications: Diet adjustments and regular physical activity.
- Oral Medications: For Type 2 diabetes, medications that enhance insulin sensitivity or stimulate insulin production.
- Insulin Therapy: Essential for Type 1 diabetes and may be necessary for Type 2 diabetes when other methods are insufficient.
Type of Diabetes
Typically diagnosed in childhood, the body doesn’t produce insulin.
Common in adults, the body becomes resistant to insulin and may not produce enough.
Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth.
Caused by specific gene mutations affecting insulin production.
